Joe Brooks, a welder for more than thirty years, is an emerging Northern California metal sculptor. His welding career started in a Bay Area oil refinery. He was formally a pipeline welder for a Northern California utility company. He found that the repetitious welding of pipeline did not feed his artistic needs and started welding in his garage, which is where he continues to create to this day. Joe finds inspiration for his sculptures through the discovery of found or discarded materials. Some of these materials are: scrap metal, old bicycle parts, rebar and cooking pans — anything that can be welded is fair game for his creative eye. Due to the nature of his art, each piece is unique with variations distinguishing it from others of similar theme. Joe has done many commissioned pieces for display in yards, offices and homes. He has shown his art in juried, invitational, group and solo exhibitions. Though he has no formal art education or schooling, he feels that he is still learning from every art piece he sculpts.
